Coastal regions are important areas in terms of natural resources and ecological diversity. Over one-third of the human population lives within 100 km of the coast, and significant economic activity occurs in this region. Both human activities and natural events such as hurricanes and tsunamis can impact the groundwater in coastal regions. This session will include topics such as the management of groundwater systems in coastal areas to minimize saltwater intrusion or maximize groundwater exploration, investigations of the effects of tsunamis and hurricanes on coastal aquifers, and optimization and modeling techniques applied to groundwater - saline water interactions.
