Technical Committees

Charge

The Hydrology Section Technical Committees are a vital part of the organization and activities of the section. A primary role for Technical Committees is to assist in planning of special sessions at the annual meetings.

Technical Committee should actively solicit proposals for special sessions to both meet the needs of their communities and appeal to the broad interests of the Hydrology Section and the Union. Each committee should schedule a Technical Committee meeting at the annual meetings to formulate and review special session proposals for upcoming meetings. Special session proposals must be approved by the committee, and session conveners should work with the Hydrology Section Program Chairs to submit descriptions of approved sessions to the AGU Program Committee (through its web-based system). On occasion, special session proposals are submitted directly to the Program Chair, outside the committee structure. If called upon by the Program Chair, the committee will review such proposals in their technical areas for conflicts and content, and make their recommendation to the Program Chair (which may include approval and sponsorship by the committee). Since space for oral sessions at the Fall Meeting is limited and typically allocated on the basis of abstract submissions (when input from the committee’s is lacking), the Technical Committees are also encouraged to prioritize approved sessions and communicate their preferences for oral sessions to assist the Program Chair in meeting scheduling.

The Technical Committee’s planning of special sessions must conform to the deadlines of the AGU Program Committee. For the Fall Meeting, the final deadline for session proposals from conveners is early June. This deadline allows Technical Committees to seek final committee approval while at the Spring Meeting. For the Spring Meeting, the first deadline for session proposals from conveners is in October. Due to its smaller attendance at the Spring Meeting, an earlier deadline is used so that AGU Program Committee can advertise and promote the meeting to participants of the Fall Meeting. Technical Committee should seek to approve special sessions in time for the first deadline. At the Fall Meeting, Technical Committees are encouraged to make a final review of the special sessions for the Spring Meeting, and finalize late proposals for sessions to fill significant gaps in the program. Late session proposals would need to be submitted to the AGU Program Committee (through the Hydrology Section Program Chair) immediately after the Fall Meeting.

Committee Chair Responsibilities

Technical Committees represent the Hydrology Section membership, and support their participation in AGU, by formulating and proposing special sessions for the annual meetings, and working with the Hydrology Section Program Chairs in meeting planning.

The primary responsibilities of a Technical Committee chair are to:

  • Solicit proposals for special sessions for upcoming annual meetings
  • Call and chair Technical Committee Meetings at the annual meetings
  • Work with the chairs of other technical committees to avoid overlap in session proposals and/or jointly plan and sponsor special sessions
  • Identify and propose invited presentations for Section Frontier Lectures
  • Attend, or send a designated committee representative, to the Technical Committee Chairs meeting at the annual meetings
  • Help conveners promote special sessions within the technical community
  • Assist the Hydrology Section Program Chairs in meeting planning when called upon
  • Encourage session conveners and chairs to fully participate in the Outstanding Student Paper Award program by having all the student presentations in their sessions judged
  • Recruit members for the committee and encourage student members to join
  • Work with committee members to nominate a new Chair and Deputy Chairs when their term expires
